Being up in Scranton, PA for a few days, I heard a lot about this weekend’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. You see, Scranton is known for two things – being the unfortunate hometown of Joe Biden and their big St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
I’m not a fan of either.
Especially parades. Standing on a street corner listening to the local high school band play songs so out of tune the medley is unrecognizable and watching the West Side Lawnmower Club drive their decorated Toro’s just doesn’t do it for me.
Listening to the radio this week I heard plenty of talk about the parade and who’s going to be in it, but the overwhelming amount of talk was about what time the bars will be open and where the best place to grab a brew at 9am is.
The County of Lackawanna Transit System issued a press release announcing free bus transportation on parade day, in an attempt to keep revelers off the road. I feel sorry for the bus drivers who have to drive the drunk bus and clean up after, well… you know.
Eeeeeeew!
I wonder what good old St. Patrick would say about how we celebrate his special day. Would the patron saint of Ireland approve of the green beer, drinking games and other assorted entertainment that comes with the celebration?
Or would he just prefer we get gas from a big plate of ham and cabbage?
