The “politically correct” redhead scene in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean at Walt Disney World debuted this week. It was announced in mid-2017 that the scene would be updated to have loot being auctioned off instead of women as has been the case since the attraction opened in 1973.
As riders float by, the wench auction scene featured a portly woman up for auction while drunk pirates heckled from across the water:
Auctioneer: Weigh anchor now, ya swabbies. What be I offered for this winsome wench? Stout ‘arted and corn fed…
Drunk Pirate: Hey, are you selling her by the pound?
Auctioneer: Shift yer cargo, dearie, show ’em your larboard side.
Standing by, the seductive redhead catches the eyes of the drunk pirates who start yelling, “we wants the redhead!” The redhead then shows a little leg making the auctioneer yell, “strike your colors you brazen wench! No need to expose your superstructure!”
That’s how the scene used to play out.
Following the re-do, things are a bit different.
Now, as you float by, you see townsfolk in line to auction off goods as the auctioneer is attempting to sell some hens.
Auctioneer: Now you scurvy scum, do I hear ten? A hen for a ten!
The portly woman from the old scene is now holding a few chickens and instead of asking to show her larboard side:
Auctioneer: Strike yer feathers dearie, show em yer flock.
Redd, the official name of the redhead, has banter back and forth and tempts the drunk pirates across the water with rum making the “we wants the redhead” chant “we wants the rum!”
Check out the video I took of the new scene and let me know what you think! I tend to think the dialogue is weak, cheesy, and well…. I want the redhead!
