Right now, millions of people across America are counting down the minutes until they leave their cubicle behind and embark on a long weekend.
I know. You’re one of them. I have a sneaking suspicion you were thinking about hot dogs, burgers and cases of cold beer since Wednesday, so hang in there. The whistle is about to blow.
As I was stalking my friends on Facebook today, I couldn’t help but notice the ads for Memorial Day Sales, the news articles about the price of gas increasing just in time for holiday travel, and the status updates from people saying “we’re off to the shore!”
Sure, we all want to save 20% on a 72” Samsung television during the big one-day sale when prices will never be lower. And which one of us doesn’t want to grab a bottle of SPF 96 and head to the beach?
Holidays, such as Memorial Day, are a great time to gather with friends and enjoy an extra day off while the boss pays us to stay at home and count the number of PBRs we can down before having to pee. But how many of us take the time to reflect on the real reason for the holiday?
This weekend, take a moment to remember the brave men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we as American’s take for granted. When you see a member of our military, thank him or her for their service. If you go to one of the many parades honoring our veterans, remind your children that it’s not about fire trucks and parade candy, but about honoring those who served their country with pride.
Happy Memorial Day.
